Social Justice @ TNS

GET INVOLVED

SJC POSITIONS

The University Social Justice Committee (SJC) membership includes staff, students, & faculty and membership rotates every 2-3 years and can be renewed. As members rotate off, the nomination committee will alert the university community of open positions and the nomination process, which includes a google doc form asking for 300 words conveying the candidate’s interest, experience, and skills.

SJ WORKING GROUPS

There are 4-5 working groups that bring their work back to the SJC (Faculty/ Student/ Staff Issues/ 4R Recruitment, Review, Retention, & Recognition; Creating a Center/Hub for work in all areas of the university; Communications/ Marketing; Events Planning). We welcome faculty, staff, and students to participate in this work, and you do not need to be a member of the larger SJC to serve on these working groups. Working Groups provide assistance and design proposals for policies to ensure that appropriate and just practices are being employed to ensure that we are successful in recruiting and retaining a diverse community who engages in service, teaching & learning, and scholarship that promotes inclusivity and addresses issues of intersectionality; those places where race, class, gender, ability, sexual orientation merge. Each Working Group encourages those who are interested in working towards these goals to contact a convener to get involved.

SJ PAGE

Please circulate, post, and share the SJ University Page link, which has direct links to all the other resources and has a list of SJCommittee members and their SJ specific bios, meeting agendas, reports, and teaching and learning series. We also ask that faculty and staff include this link on their course/ office/ department pages as a way to highlight opportunities to engage in social justice. We would like to see this be a standard practice.

SOCIAL JUSTICE ALLIES

There are now 40 Social Justice Allies on campus this fall–students from across the university who have participated in the annual Social Justice Retreat and will serve as peer resources for student-led efforts for diversity, equity and social justice on campus. As they define their work they will need the support of faculty and staff to bring awareness to their work so that peers can participate in four priority areas: Gender/LGBQT Justice, Health Justice, Economic Justice, and Racial Justice. Their information and work will be highlighted on the SJBlog

STUDENTS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

This student organization’s work is centered on SJ and students can find more information on the Student Organization Page.

STAY INFORMED

SOCIAL JUSTICE RESOURCE CENTER

We also encourage the university community to stop by and use The Social Justice Resource Center, located at A709 (in the Social Justice Initiatives office) where students, staff and faculty can borrow from over 200 books, guides and DVDs focused on a range of social justice-themed topics –from food justice, antiracism, gender equity, health justice, and disability studies—just to name a few.   All references are accessible from Library Thing, a virtual searchable catalog. The space is staffed and also serves as a community building space.
