This year the Conflict and Security Concentration is hosting a series of roundtable talks featuring leading professionals and academics in the field.  The first discussion will take place on Wednesday October 15th at 6pm (in the Hirshon Suite, second floor, 55 W 13th Street) and will be led by Dean Piedmont, Programme Specialist at UNDP’s Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery. Dean has worked extensively in the field of peacebuilding and post-conflict statebuilding and has been involved in a variety of projects from institution building in Iraq to the reintegration of child soldiers in Sierra Leone.  For this discussion Dean has shared a paper he has written about his experience promoting DDR initiatives in South Sudan and Afghanistan. The original version of the article was published in the Journal of Peacebuilding and Development, a journal edited by GPIA faculty Professor Erin McCandless. Please see a brief background to the article following this message. Mr. Piedmont’s article is included as an attachment.

Participants are asked to come to the event having read the article and prepared to engage critically with their peers and the author on the specific subject.  In addition to grappling with relevant topics and debates in the current conflict and security discourses, this is an excellent opportunity for students to meet and network with active practitioners and thinkers in the discipline.

Since the aim of the series is to foster an engaged, intimate and active discussion, participation is limited.  If interested in attending please RSVP to Emma Stoskopf-Ehrlich at [email protected] to reserve your place.
