The Graduate Program in International Affairs wishes to congratulate Alumnus Josh Greenstein on the upcoming completion of his PhD in Economics from The New School for Social Research and on his new job as Assistant Professor in Economics at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Fall 2015, an excellent liberal arts college in New York. Josh attended GPIA from 2007-2009, and graduated with a concentration in Development. Josh credits his experience at GPIA with providing the intellectual groundwork for his continued studies and future research; both in terms of providing his first experience studying economics at the graduate level, and through the exposure to a multitude of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives that continue to inform his understanding of development. In addition, studying at GPIA provided the opportunity to form many relationships, both with faculty and with fellow students that have been and continue to be both personally and professionally fruitful. Josh’s research interests broadly include issues of growth and distribution, economic inequality, and development policy. His dissertation research is on the welfare effects of the phenomenon of premature deindustrialization; an assessment of the effects on people’s lives and well-being of the low generation of manufacturing employment in currently developing and middle income countries. In addition to this research, Josh has also worked with GPIA Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr on several research projects. This work has mainly focused on measurements of development and global goals, and on their uses and misuses.
